An Invitation to Seduction by Lorraine Heath (2004)

Historical romance. Victorian-era England. Book 4 of the Daughters of Fortune series. Kitty spends almost the whole book feeling shameful of her lustful desires for the man she spied swimming in the sea and wants to retreat into the safety and comfort of her soon-to-be fiance who stirs absolutely none of these emotions. Richard is a duke who is baffled that his longtime friend will wed an American heiress, since he knows that his friend will be unable to be a good husband. Turns out that’s the guy that Kitty is almost engaged to and Richard tries to steal her away from him. It’s a lot of seduction and maneuvering in this book with Kitty learning to accept her own desires and attraction towards Richard. As always, there’s lots of drama and angst and heartbreak along the way, even though there isn’t too much character growth for Richard himself.

The Earl’s Brazen Widow by Caroline Lee (2022)

Historical romance. Victorian-era Scotland. Book 2 of the Those Kilted Bastards series. Malcolm is the illegitimate son of an earl who once had a relationship with his late father’s widow, Violet. He’s ignored her letters for the past ten years but happens to open the one where she says that his home and farm is going to be sold. Malcolm travels to the earl’s estate to confront Violet and somehow strikes a bargain where he’ll tutor her son in exchange for the deed to his house. (But I thought Violet needed the money from selling that house, so why can she just give it away right now?) As Violet and Malcolm spend more time together, it’s clear they’re still in love, but need to talk through what went wrong all those years ago and how she ended up married to his father. And of course the age of her son is a bit suspicious, even though Malcolm hasn’t put the pieces together yet. Quick read, steamy, and humorous, especially the kid’s fascination with animal waste.

The Heiress Swap by Maddison Michaels (2023)

Historical romance. Victorian-era England. Book 1 of the Dollar Princess series. Evie is the orphaned illegitimate cousin and companion to American heiress Aimee who convinces Evie to switch places for the Season: Evie will go to balls and events while Aimee works as a secretary at her father’s company. Stern, serious, skeptical duke Alex believes that Evie (as Aimee) has set her sights on his cousin’s title and swears to prevent such deception and heartbreak from taking place. He has his own hang-ups after he caught his ex-fiancee cheating on him the night before their wedding and he’s completely distrustful of women. But of course, Alex and Evie have a lot of common interests and he slowly starts to realize that she is not trying to entrap a titled lord after all. Evie feels terrible for not being honest about her identity, especially as she starts to actually fall in love with Alex, knowing that he will hate her dishonesty. The book was a little slow-going at times, but we get a bit of external drama with fossils and caves and thugs hired to scare Evie, which brings out Alex’s protective side.

Contemporary romance. Book 1.5 of the Christmas Notch series. Being in the same working circle (in the adult film industry), Luca has had a crush on Angel for ages and they finally hook up when working on the same movie set. After a month together, it seems that Angel has ghosted Luca, so Luca blocks Angel everywhere. Fast forward seven months and they’re stuck working on yet another film together and need to confront their feelings and what all went wrong. It’s a quick and dirty novella with lots of steam. Standout page of the book goes to Luca explaining to Angel what omegaverse and knotting is.

Saved by the Scot by Jennifer Haymore (2023)

Historical romance. Regency-era England. Book 3 of the Highland Knights series. We jump right into the drama here with Lady Emilia showing up at the Knights’ house a big bloody mess. Turns out her father has viciously whipped her after she found evidence of a treasonous plot against the crown. Sir Colin is the only man that she trusts and he’s tasked with hiding her away in Scotland until her father can be apprehended. We get a road trip romance here with both Colin and Emilia suffering from past trauma (him from his time in the war, her from her abusive father) but getting to know and trust each other. Things continue to take a dangerous turn when her father eventually catches up to them. It’s a lot of action and adventure in this one, but luckily no third-act break-ups.

Historical romance. Regency or Victorian-era England. Book 1 of the Forgotten Princesses series. Grier is the illegitimate daughter of a wealthy businessman and being trotted out on the marriage mart with a huge dowry. While she’s hiding behind potted plants and avoiding the gossip about her, she overhears a prince disparaging her. Sevastian is out to find an heiress to marry and bring home to his impoverished war-torn country and believes Grier to be completely unsuitable for anything except his mistress. Sev and Grier angrily flirt every time they’re together, though they’re both courting other people. They somehow end up having an affair and ultimately get caught in a compromising situation. There’s tons more drama involving some shady side characters, which definitely keeps things interesting.

Lessons from a Scandalous Bride Sophie Jordan (2012)

Historical romance. Regency or Victorian-era England. Book 2 of the Forgotten Princesses series. Cleo is the sister of Grier and also on the marriage mart. She’s been courting a very elderly earl, much to the concern of her family. She has a good reason though: She’s looking to marry someone who will not (cannot) make demands of her in the marriage bed. Cleo has had the trauma of caring for too many siblings, watching weak ones die, carrying away stillborn siblings, and seeing her mother suffer the ills of labor. She wants very much to avoid that type of life and entrapment so avoids men who might prompt that future. Meanwhile, Logan is in London to find an heiress to marry and restore his castle in Scotland. While he is busy courting some vapid debutante, he’s more intrigued by Cleo and declares that he’d rather marry her instead. She refuses of course, but he is persistent in his pursuit. In this book, we’re mostly dealing with Cleo and her emotional issues and learning to accept the affection and passion that she has been denying herself.

His Perfect Princess by Caroline Lee (2023)

Historical romance. Victorian-era European Island. Book 1 of the Tales of the Harlot’s Guide series. Quick and dirty novella. Rickard, the crown prince of an island nation is told by his father that he must marry, and he already has a bride picked out. The sweet, innocent, and docile Clarissa is his choice of bride and thoughts of dominating her in the bedroom stir up plenty of emotion in Rickard. Lucky for him, Clarissa is very willing to go along with all of Rickard’s commands and enjoys being told what to do. Really, that’s it. The romance is on the instantaneous side of the spectrum with no angst whatsoever.

The Sinner’s Tempting Captor by Caroline Lee (2022)

Historical romance. Victorian-era Scotland. Book 4 of the Those Kilted Bastards series. We start here with a kidnapping from prison, where Honoria has bribed a warden to let her take Crowe with her. We’ve learned about Crowe in the previous books, where his friends believed him to have murdered their other friend James (who is also Honoria’s brother). While we do eventually find out why Crowe went to prison and who actually killed James, this book introduces us to Honoria’s crazy family dynamics and allows the potential reconciliation between Honoria and Crowe. The standout star of the book is younger brother Bull for all his comic relief. Things definitely get dramatic in this book, setting up the events that lead to the Surprise! Dukes series.
